Project Title

 

'Protecting Vulnerable Palestinian agriculture-based livelihoods in Southern West Bank by sustaining and developing agricultural production capacity vital for food security within a commercial and ecological perspective', funded by the European Commission EC, and in partnership with Oxfam Solidarity Belgium OSB.

 

Project Description

 

The project aims at improving income of small holder farmers by improving access to improved productive natural resource assets.

 

Target Group

 

The project mainly targets vulnerable and poor farmers, and small holder farmers lacking the means to invest in inputs, and with limited know-how in villages and rural areas with limited income resources. Selection of beneficiaries is based on equal opportunities for all with vulnerable agriculture-based livelihoods.

 

Justification

 

-         Improve the status of food security in Southern West Bank especially for rural families with vulnerable agriculture-based livelihoods.

-         Developing potential productive land through land reclamation and rehabilitation activities, as part of developing productive natural resource assets.

 

 Objectives

 

-         To improve income of small holder farmers by improving access to improved productive natural resource assets.

-         To increase investment in the agricultural sector, and thus increasing employment in the agricultural sector.

-         To encourage the participation of women in rural development, through involving rural women in the project and increasing their participation in the agricultural sector.

-         To promote best-farming practices and new techniques.

 

Project Duration

 

36 months

 

Concrete Outputs

 

I.                   Land Reclamation

 

1. Reclamation of 1,500 dunums for 250 families.

2. Building of 90,00m² retaining walls.

3. Construction of 100 cisterns (volume: 50 – 80m³ per cistern).

4. Planting 75,000 seedlings and 3,000kg of seeds.

5. Opening 30km agricultural roads, including the construction of 24,000m³.

6. Creating 1,575 job opportunities. 

 

II.                Land Rehabilitation

 

1. Rehabilitation of 543 dunums for 106 families.

2. Rehabilitation of 21,700m² of retaining walls.

3. Construction of 40 cisterns (volume: 50 – 80m³ per cistern).

4. Planting 10,000 seedlings.

5. Creating 425 job opportunities.

 

III.             Training (Theoretical and Practical) and Extension Services

 

1. Conducting 305 training hours; 101.5 training hours per group (225 hours theoretical and 270 hours practical training) 25 hours of theoretical training and 75 practical training per group.

2. Training will be provided to 356 farmers.

3. An estimate number of 9 collective farmers' groups will be set up.

4. 356 training manuals will be prepared, printed and disseminated.

5. Organization of 11 comparative field visits among beneficiary groups in different locations.

 

IV.              Improvement and Production of Pure Local Seeds

 

1. Conducting 495 training hours; 55 training hours per group (225 hours theoretical and 270 hours practical training) 25 hours of theoretical training and 30 practical training per group (9 farmers' groups).

2. 180 farmers will be provided with suitable inputs for seeds production and improvement (Including training and extension services).

3. 180 training manuals will be prepared, printed and disseminated.

4. 1,200 dunums will be cultivated: 1,000 dunums for field crops and 200 dunums for vegetable crops.

5. Pure local seeds will become available for local input use: 17 varieties for vegetable and 6 varieties for field crops.
